Riffling through my 7″s #3
I’m not quite sure what the story behind this was. But it came to pass that - in that most indie of old-style indie traditions, Franz Ferdinand and the Fire Engines released a split 7″. Each of them covering one of the other’s songs. So Franz did ‘Get Up And Use Me’ and the Engines did ‘Jacqueline.’ The Engines did briefly reform, playing a gig in Edinburgh which I was at, just somewhat the worse for wear, having already got there for Aberfeldy and Sons & Daughters. Ah well…

Hi Ed… it may just be my internet connection which is stupid currently, but I have twice got an error message from Mediafire when trying to download Get up and Use Me… haven’t tried Jacqueline so cannot comment….. something needing sorted?

I *think* they recorded the split single to either sell or give away at a gig, I forget which, the Fire Engines supported Franz Ferdinand at the SECC at the end of 2004.
That would figure, picked my copy up for £2 in a charity shop in Edinburgh, just when I thought I was never going to find it!

I’ve got a recording (3 tracks) of the FEs dated 17/09/05 Live at the ICA.
Was this a genuine reunion attempt or just a bit of fun? Davy Henderson seems pretty busy with other projects these days.
Think the reunion around this time was just for fun, Davey Henderson is still doing nectarine No.9 and the Sexual Objects, as far as I know. Anyone know anything else?!?!

Fire Engines have been a huge influence on loads of Scottish guitar bands over the past 20 years, not least FF. At the very height of their critical acclaim (ie pre the release of the second LP), the Fire Engines were invited to support FF on an Arena Tour, thus giving Davey Henderson a much-deserved few quid.
The single wasnt however a give-away…it was a bona-fide release that you had to buy….but I cant remember if it was only available at the gigs….
