Guilty pleasures

A few months ago, I posted ‘Summer Of ‘69′ by Bryan Adams, one guilty pleasure from the eighties.
This is another.
Guns ‘n’ Roses t-shirts can now be bought in Next, I see. This is yet another example of band tees being sold to folks who have very little clue about who the band actually are…or is it? I’ve ground my teeth seeing people walking around in those Ramones T-shirts who I suspect have no clue who they are. But G’n'R were always a bit more mainstream.
Their debut Appetite For Destruction came out in 1987. They took forever to follow it up, well four years with Lose the Plot one and 2, sorry Use Your Illusion I and II (Exhibit A for the Prosecution: why releasing Albums on CD became a bad idea, Exhibit B Oasis’ Be Here Now). Last year they released their album Chinese Democracy which was first being slated for release when I was still at school…I’m now 32. Somehow, I didn’t even put it on my Christmas list. Must have had my mind on other things.
But all those things aside…this is a class tune. And if this doesn’t make you want to headbang and play air guitar…well, i guess you were never an adolescent boy, were you…?

as soon as i saw the pic I had my fingers crossed as to what the track was going to be. One of my all time favourites, wrapped up with so many memories for various times (none of them the eighties, but hey, i’m young!)…this track has only one problem; there is not a kick ass ski slope in the Alps long enough to let it play from beginning to end.
This is probably not true of course, but it always feels like it when you’re just really getting into the solo and the lifts hove into sight.
It was the Motorhead (I can’t find the key for the umlaut) t-shirts in Top Shop that always inexplicably annoyed me. Possibly due to an incident with a girl who was wearing one in a pub, but that’s probably sharing too much.
Helen - don’t ski, but i see what you mean…probably seems longer live.
Jim - remember those tees as well; if they do it to my beloved Cure there will be hell to pay…
I wait for the day in about 20 years when we see tweens wandering around in their new Arab Strap t-shirts from wherever tween girls buy clothes.
Oh God, that is so true…
according to legend, Arab Strap’s Aidan Moffat was told by his Gran that as they were from Falkirk they should call themselves Central Belt. Heh heh…as to whether he explained to her exactly what an Arab Strap is or not is unrecorded…
The great thing about this blog is that you show your own views of the records you mention on the blog. I notice a lot of blogs just post or upload the records with no personal touch.
Their debut is great, but the problem i find listening to it is that because the singles from it have had so much airplay - you just cant be bothered listening to it again. This kinda makes it less epic but i imagine when it came out it would of been seen as something god like.
SW
*blush* thank you!
it was kinda godlike. And until Nirvana came along, G’n'R were the metal band that everyone liked. I know Nirvana made out they weren’t heavy metal - but they were closer to it than Barry Manilow.
ha yeah,
that’s probably one of the reasons axel disliked kurt.axel is a very jealous man i think.- a big kid and an arse and that album is the probably only thing he has got going for him. still to buy Chinese Democracy as well- i think they are releasing part 2 some time.
SW
…part 2?!?! Sometime this year or sometime when Axl discovers his pension has run out?!
I’ll pass on this thank you very much..
Fair enough : )
I’m with JC on this one. Motorhead that is a different story, was listening to On Parole on Sunday.
Axel Rose - Arse
Motorhead have never been a guilty pleasure -where do folks stand on Van Halen and Iron Maiden?
i went through a faze of liking both van halen and iron maiden when i was 13. they both great guitar bands.
SW
Both bands with varying lead singers over the years, as did Black Sabbath for that matter. Maybe I should do a Van Halen post sometime…?!
Love this, love Van Halen, love Black Sabbath, love Motorhead, and no, you didn’t need to be an adolescent BOY
Nirvana were the antithesis to this… you sat down and got stoned to Kurt’s music, stoned and angry. The others made you stand up and dance and act like a fool and laugh at yourself and hope to god to get laid.

Motorehead, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Guns ‘n’ Roses…I hate the whole ‘genre’ of metal. Really really detest it…..
Two very conflicting responses…WOW!
Unquestionably, there is some rubbish metal out there; most of Guns ‘n’Roses output post-Appetite; there is some rubbish like with any genre. Deep Purple’s In Rock is a classic to some, I would cite it as one of the reasons why punk had to happen!
