Isobel Campbell

I’m currently trying to put together to the mother of all best of scottish playlists on the iPod. The condition is that each band only gets one song, though related acts can qualify (for example, Edwyn Collins is on there as a member of Orange Juice, solo, and collaborating with Paul Quinn). There are currently 280 acts on there (including Rod Stewart, not including Sandi thom, Runrig or Danananackroyd, for aesthetic reasons).
Belle and Sebastian made the list early, of course. Isobel Campbell makes the cut as member of Gentle Waves, her early side project and as a solo artist.
Gentle Waves -’Falling From Grace.’ mp3
Isobel Campbell -’Time Is Just the Same.’ mp3 (featuring Eugene Kelly of Vaselines/Eugenius fame).
Though not eligible for the best of scottish playlist, she has also made two phenomenal albums with Mark Lanegan (of Screaming Trees fame) Ballad Of The Broken Seas and Sunday at Devil Dirt.
…oh, go on then!
Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan -’Deus Ibi Est.’ mp3

There will be a lot of good stuff on there but Rod Stewart?
Why????????
Because ‘Maggie Mae’ by rod Stewart is an excellent song, and you don’t think John Peel played mandolin on Top of the pops with just anyone do you?!?!
I would have thought the fact that Rod was born and raised in London would have disqualified him from your playlist though
see: http://www.jocknroll.co.uk/Introduction.htm for some ideas on this.
The List magazine included Rod Stewart, the Eurythmics and Snow Patrol in their list of 50 bst scottish bands of all time in 2004, so I’m including them too.
Rod Stewart was born of scottish descent and his brothers were born here, so he gets through, plus the fact that he still supports scotland, not to mention being here rather more often than Sean Connery. And as has been pointed out elsewhere, not one of Big Country was born in Scotland (FACT!!) only one of Franz Ferdinand was, but they’re scottish bands as far as most of us are concerned.
I have to say I’m firmly in the ‘Jock n Roll’ camp on this one. ‘Rod Stewart is as Scottish as Jimmy Hill’ sums it up for me
I’ve just done a bit about a Scottish band caled ‘Moondials’ on my blog. Have you heard of them?
MM
I haven’t…but will pop over and check them out - cheers!
Aw, I really like Danananackroyd…
I’m afraid I have tried and failed to love them…
Fair enough. I was on the fence myself for a while, but Black Wax swung it for me.
