The return of Meursault!

meursault-500

Perhaps the biggest stars so far of fellow Edinburgh blog turned label, Song, By Toad Records, Meursault are set to release their third album Something For The Weakened on July 16.

Having recorded their previous two albums in bedrooms and living rooms, this album was recorded in an actual recording studio (Pumpkinfield Studios, near Perth). Production duties were handled by Pete Harvey, the ‘cellist whose work on other SbTr records I have singled out on this blog before.

‘Flittin’ is the first single from the album, and you can stream it here:

The full tracklisting for the album is:

Thumb
Flittin’
Lament For A Teenage Millionaire
Settling
Hole
Lightning Bolt
Dull Spark
Dearly Distracted
Mamie
Untitled

It’s playing as I write; so far the album sounds bloody brilliant.

It’s always good to support your local record store, but you can also buy the 7″ of Flittin’ from the Song, By Toad Records site. You can also donwload mp3s from the site of earlier Meursault work.

Album review – Cold Seeds

King Creosote, Meursault and Animal Magic Tricks -‘Cold Seeds.’ (Song, By Toad Records)

This is clearly the year of painfully cool collaborations (see also: Burns Unit). Cold Seeds is Kenny Anderson (AKA King Creosote), Neil Pennycook (of Meursault, who also features on the forthcoming debut album from the Last Battle), Frances Donnelly (AKA Animal Magic Tricks), and cellist Pete Harvey who plays with both Meursault and The Leg.

This album was recorded over two weekends last year at Song, By Toad HQ. It was literally recorded live in the living room -and you can hear Floyd the cat on the first track (he’s a Maine coon, and absolutely gorgeous). This whole album is a lo-fi gem. You may have heard ‘Crank Resolutions’ on the most recent Meursault album (I certainly hope you have by now) and King Creosote’s ‘By 11 o’clock she’d left,’ one of my favourite songs of his. Both songs appear performed by the artists together, in radically different form. For my money, the highlight of the album is the King Creosote-led version of Donnelly’s song ‘the Perfume Of Mexican Birds.’

It is as lofi as anything, and that will probably put some people off. Their loss. This is a document of what sounds like two wonderful weekends and something you oughta hear if you have any interest in the current scottish music scene, and indeed, beyond.

Cold Seeds is released on Song By Toad Records (officially) on September 20.

Retreat -definitely not a sign of weakness!

withered-hand21

The Retreat Festival will take place in Edinburgh on August 28 and 29 this year.

Both Emily from Tracer Trails and Bart Owl of eagleowl fame have been in touch about this, it’s an awesome lineup with many acts I’ve featured here on 17 Seconds, such as Withered Hand (above), Wounded Knee, Meursault, Jesus H. Foxx and eagleowl. Whilst I won’t be able to attend it all (I’ve got tickets for Broken Records on the Saturday Night), I’m going to bust a gut to go and see at least some of it. I don’t want to rehash the press release, so I’ve cut and pasted it:

” Venerable DIY gig-putteronners Tracer Trails and The Gentle Invasion are thrilled to announce the third edition of Retreat!, a micro-festival celebrating Edinburgh’s contribution to the international pop underground.

Following on from previous years which have seen the festival occupy spaces in St John’s Church and the Bristo Hall, this year’s Retreat! will be a two-day event taking place in Pilrig St Paul’s Church Hall, on the boundary between Edinburgh and the City of Leith.

Retreat! was founded in 2008 to create space for Edinburgh acts amid the bustle of the festivals, and has evolved into a riotous A.G.M. for the capital’s independent pop scene.

In its inaugural year Retreat! encompassed nine events over three weeks; in 2009 it took the form of a giant celebratory all-dayer as part of the Forest Fringe. Retreat! 2010 is different again, a lost weekend when Edinburgh’s first XVI will perform in a deranged gala-day environment in which anything might happen and some things probably will.

Hosted by the incomparable Owen Curtis Williams (The Pineapple Chunks / drummer-about-town), and with stage design by Tessa Lynch, the only common thread in this vibrant melange is the organisers’ overwhelming respect for each act’s inimitable contribution to the international pop underground.

Retreat! stands for: –

• cheap cheap tickets
• all-ages admission
• the most extravagant staging and costumery no money can buy
• film screenings, record stalls, book stalls, and food!

Retreat! The Line-Up:-

7VWWVW (golden synth buzz and burr)
Benni Hemm Hemm (our icelandic friend and his big band)
Conquering Animal Sound (radio friendly unit shifters)
The Douglas Firs (snow-capped downbeat singalong)
eagleowl (fearsome slowcore foursome)
Enfant Bastard (brainless gameboy spraff)
FOUND (slick pop outfit)
Jesus H. Foxx (slacker-pop septet)
The Leg (dangerous panda-masked post-punk)
Meursault (tipped for the top)
Milk (sleazy glasgow supergroup)
Rob St John (resident ecologist)
Skeleton Bob (not a country band)
The Wee Rogue (sings the corries)
Withered Hand (badly lapsed antifolk)
Wounded Knee (loopy primitivist technocrat)”

2010…so far

dj-ed-jupp

Me on the decks at Pin Ups, Glasgow

It’s been a great start to the year, musically, and I’ve been trying to hear as much stuff as I possibly can. There’s been some wonderful stuff, some not so good stuff -and no doubt some stuff that I’ll rant about, and yet possibly even change my mind about.

So what’s floated my boat this year so far? Well, I’ve really, really loved the latest eagleowl EP Into The Fold, the closing track ‘No Conjunction’ is without a doubt my song of the year so far. I’ve also been knocked for six by Delorean’s latest album, Subiza, and the Call to Mind EP, all of which got five stars here.

Sure, the scots have had some excellent albums so far this year, what with the sophomore from Meursault, All Creatures Will Make Merry, and debuts from Kid Canaveral and Mitchell Museum. To say nothing of a slew of excellent releases from the likes of Burnt Island, The Scottish Enlightenment, Cancel the astronauts and Fear the Fives.

Further afield, I’ve been loving The Drums, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Dum Dum Girls and the Soft Pack, and the Futureheads have returned with what is clearly their best record since their debut. It’s not all been indie round these parts, though, as you’ll see when I post my review of the latest M.I.A. album, and releases from Konono No.1, Four Tet and Yeasayer have also kept their place around here. I was less than impressed by latest offerings from the likes of The New Pornographers and The National, though…

There’s still another six months left to go, of course, but it’s been great, so far…

Very exciting news!

last-battle-withered-hand-gig

We are extremely excited that the Last Battle, who released their debut single ‘Ruins’ this week on 17 Seconds Records (17SEC19) will be supporting Withered Hand at the Electric Circus in Edinburgh on August 17.

Withered Hand’s debut album Good News was one of THE releases of last year; I interviewed Dan Willson in January and he’s a fantastic bloke. Interestingly, both bands have worked with Neil Pennycook of Meursault, whose profile continues to rise with slots at Glastonbury and T in the Park. If you haven’t got Meursault’s albums, you are letting yourself down, badly.

In other news, I’ve been offered my own radio show on Fresh Air radio, the local student radio station in Edinburgh.

very excited too…watch this space…

Album Review – Meursault

Meursault -‘All Creatures Will Make Merry’ (Song, By Toad Records)

Meursault’s debut album Kissing With Tongues/Pissing On Bonfires crept out quietly on the Song, By Toad label at the very end of 2008. With the Edinburgh music scene gathering considerable momentum in 2009 -in no small part thanks to Song, By Toad’s Matthew Young’s hard work, their sophomore arrives eighteen months later with a considerable weight of expectation. Yes, they’re now vying with Broken Records as one of the most important scottish acts of the last couple of years. Neil Pennycook has collaborated with many of the local scene to whom he is seen -whether he wants to be or not as one of the leading figures, and he has featured on albums by the likes of Withered Hand and The Last Battle. Scottish music magazine The Skinny can be incredibly harsh on local acts, but at the end of last year the debut made a top twenty scottish albums of the decade alongside a list also featuring the likes of Mogwai, Idlewild and Primal Scream. So no pressure then…

Meursault seem by some to have been labelled as ‘folktronica;’ not a label I’m personally all that comfortable with in their case. Not because I haven’t enjoyed some music that comes under that heading – but because it implies something slightly more ‘chill out’ than this album. Yes, ‘folk’ and ‘electronica’ make up part of the musical potion on aural display here, but there’s also an epicness and grandeur (and I mean that as a compliment) that has more in common with the likes of early albums by fellow scots Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad. Though there’s far more inventiveness going on here than I find on those band’s albums, which is why I think in the long wrong Meursault will prove themselves to be such an important proposition. Second track ‘Crank Resolutions’ is heartbreaking yet somehow life-affirming in that there are bands making albums like this :’I broke down on new Year’s Day/I mixed my drinks and lost my way.’

Considered on their own, the lyric sheet to the album might give the impression that this is bleakness on a parallel with the world-weary life-view of Aidan Moffat. But there is a sense towards the end of the album that there is hope. It is an album that rewards repeated listens and is best listened to as a whole -‘One Day This’ll All be Fields’ or ‘Payday’ perhaps not making much sense outside the context of the album. But that’s not a bad thing; in an age where download services mean that people are cherry-picking what they take from an album, this adds to the cohesion of the whole.

Will this break Meursault through to a wider audience? I believe so, but I’m encouraged that they haven’t abandoned the ideas, exploration and experimentation that made them so vital to begin with. This may not charge up album charts around the world, but those who take the opportunity to listen and listen again will enjoy a highly accomplished and brilliant second album.

What’s happening at Song, By Toad Records?

song

Matthew Young writes one of the best-regarded mp3 blogs around, in Song, By Toad. He also runs a fine label, Song, By Toad Records and since we met at a Camera Obscura gig in 2007, we have been pretty supportive of each other’s blogging and record shananigans.

So, I feel rather ashamed that I haven’t covered his most recent releases over the last couple of months in more detail, and whilst this post is not a full review (these will come, promise), this is a guide to what he and his artists are up to. (This post does not cover the excellent Jesus H. Foxx, but as I reviewed their gig from last week, hopefully that won’t matter).

Maxwell Panther 3

Maxwell Panther is a singer-songwriter whose music has been described by Toad as sounding ‘Rough as a bear’s arse’ so if you are expecting Mike Oldfield type stuff, you will be disappointed (It is also debatable, however, whether you have anything to contribute to the world other than one day becoming fertilizer). His debut album Do You Feel Different Yet? is indeed rough sounding, but that’s part of its’ charm. And the fact that they’re some bloody great songs on it. Like these two:

Maxwell Panther -‘My Ex-Identity.’ mp3

Maxwell Panther -‘Lost Soul On A Roll (That’s Me).’ mp3

Do You Feel Different Yet? is out now

trips-and-falls

There’s so few bands ever who have sounded like Trips and Falls. that doesn’t matter – because as far as I’m concerned, when you hear their excellent album He Was Such A Quiet Boy you will fall for them hook, line and sinker. And how can you not love a song title like ‘And in Real Life He Wears Corduroy Pants?’

Trips and Falls -‘And In Real Life He Wears Corduroy Pants.’ mp3

Trips And Falls -‘How Do You Do…’ mp3

He Was Such A Quiet Boy is out now

loch-lomond

Loch Lomond released a split 12″ single with the Builders And Butchers on Song, By Toad Records last year. The Portland, Oregon band are shortly to release an EP on Song, By Toad Records on May 17 entitled Night Bats. Check this out:

Loch Lomond -‘Wax and Wire.’ mp3

meursault

Last, but by no means least, the mighty Meursault are to release their hotly anticipated sophomore album on May 24, entitled All Creatures Will Make Merry. I loved their debut Pissing On Bonfires/Kissing With Tongues and having taken delivery of their new album last night, it looks like lightning might well have struck twice:

Looking for more ideas for Christmas?

8bittree

So, it’s six days to go to Christmas, and you’re still wondering what to get various family and friends for Christmas. The head of a banker on a plate? Tempting. The heads of David Cameron and Gordon Brown? Maybe, maybe. Simon Cowell’s soul? You can’t buy what doesn’t exist. Or was it sold for thirty pieces of silver many years ago?

Anyway…confessions of a justified snipper aside, why not bear in mind these great presents from the scottish music scene, as stocking fillers or whatever, depending on your budgets and generosity?

First up, Avalanche Records have put together a rather fine compilation that retails for just £5 of excellent scottish bands doing Christmas songs. It does include our very own X-Lion Tamer doing a song called ‘Little Drum Machine Boy’ (no, not the one that Beck was doing that still does the rounds on the internet). As Tony T said himself, it’s nice to be competing with the big boys. The tracklisting is as follows.

1. There Will Be Fireworks – In Excelsis Deo
2. The Savings & Loan – Christmastime in the Mountains
3. Rob St John – December & Whisky
4. Frightened Rabbit – It’s Christmas So We’ll Stop
5. Pictish Trail – But Once a Year
6. Eagleowl – Sleep the Winter
7. Withered Hand – It’s a Wonderful Lie
8. Meursault – Christmas in Kirkcaldy
9. Emily Scott – Holy
10. Money Can’t Buy music – Atoms
11. Saint Jude’s Infirmary – Xmas in New York
12. Broken Records – All So Tired
13. Ballboy – Shallow Footprints in the Snow
14. X-Lion Tamer – Little Drum Machine Boy
15. Zoey Van Goey – In Scotland it Never Snowed, In Canada it Did

If you can’t get to Edinburgh why not order it here?

The Withered Hand single has also been made available as a free download (if you give free downloads as a christmas present you are taking Presbyterianism to frightening levels) so why not check it out if you still haven’t?

Withered Hand -‘It’s A Wonderful Lie.’ mp3

Meanwhile, Meursault made one of last year’s best albums in Pissing On Bonfires/ Kissing With Tongues. This year has seen them release the excellent Nothing Broke EP and also two 7″ singles “William Henry Miller Pt.1” and er, “William Henry Miller Pt. 2” You can buy the 7″s individually for £3 or together for £5. These can be found at Avalanche or ordered direct from Song By Toad Records here

Meursault -‘William Henry Miller.’ Pt 1

…as indeed can the excellent six track EP Matter by Jesus H. Foxx, which I have frothed about many times and which includes this excellent track:

Jesus H. Foxx -‘I’m Half The Man You Were.’ mp3

I’m still kicking myself for not having managed to see eagleowl yet -they have just released a stunning single ‘Sleep the Winter’/’Laughter’ which I have played incessantly. Their debut EP For The Thoughts You Never Had appears to have sold out, though I have seen a copy in Avalanche. The 7″ is beautifully packaged and worth every penny of the £4 or so. See here or here.

eagleowl -‘Laughter.’ mp3

This year has seen amazing debuts from many Scottish bands, all of whom should be on your Christmas present list – or on the list of things you thought you’d get other people. This should include the self-titled albums from both The Gothenburg Address and There Will Be Fireworks.

There Will Be Fireworks -‘Foreign Thoughts.’ mp3

Chemikal Underground continue to amaze all as ever, with their debuts from The Phantom band Checkmate Savage and Lord Cut-Glass’ self-titled debut (AKA Alun Woodward from the Delgados)

Phantom Band -‘Folksong Oblivion.’ mp3

Lord Cut-Glass -‘Even Jesus Couldn’t Love You.’ mp3

And if you’re still searching for more ideas for the music fan in your life, check the Scottish BaMS list (of which i am proud to be one!) here on Peenko, where we were asked for our views on the best albums of 2009 or indeed my own best of year list.

Album Review: Meursault

Meursault -‘Pissing On Bonfires/Kissing With Tongues.’ (Song By Toad Records)

Wow. Not content with writing a fine blog and having some of the Scottish Capital’s finest bands round for sessions, Song By Toad has set up a record label.

And damn it, everyone’s favourite reptilian blogger has done it again. Not content with releasing the rather good Nightjar EP, SBTR have released one of the year’s finest albums. Damn you! Meursault have been plying their trade around the capital for a while now, and as their lineup has taken a while to settle, it has resulted in this stunning debut.

Call it folktronica, call it modern scottish; draw parallels with releases from Wounded Knee, Broken Records and even Swimmer One, whatever! This is a very strong, beautiful album. With 11 tracks in 39 minutes there is no flab. Instead, a wonderfully toned and tuned album that makes you want to hear it again and again.

Gorgeous tunes that you will want to play to everyone you know…what’s not to love? Messrs Bryant, Pennycook, MacLeod and calder have, with Mr. Toad, delivered what I believe to be one of the year’s best albums.
