Does there have to be a reason?

kristin-hersh

…fifteen years on, I still find this song extremely beautiful and affecting, despite, or maybe because of its’ simplicity. Just as, uh, haunting as the title suggests.

The genius function in my head was looking for ‘Cry Baby Cry’ off the Chains Changed EP, which I couldn’t find to post, so I’m listening to Vashti Bunyan instead.

Anyway, hope you enjoy this…

  1. God I love that song. Always have, from the first time I heard it on the radio in Albany, New York, in 1994. I’ve never really listened to Kristin Hersh much otherwise, but this tune has always stuck with me.

I’m not an authority on her solo work by any means, but this track is absolutely gorgeous. I’ve got most of the Throwing Muses stuff. She is an absolute legend. Glad you like this track!

I guess one Muses release you still have to get is the In a Doghouse 2CD set. For now, here’s the Chains Changed EP part of it:

Cheers, eyevocal, haven’t got round to getting the Doghouse set as I’ve got most of it on vinyl (throwing Muses LP, Fat Skier and Chains Changed) but thank you so much for this!

You’re welcome. The Fat Skier EP isn’t on this set (it’s bonus tracks on the House Tornado CD). Apart from the first album and Chains Changed, it has the Doghouse cassette (an early demo), five new recordings of songs written at the beginning of their career, and the “Fish” video (Quicktime format).

  6. Ed says:

Wow sounds like there’s enough on it to make it worth investigating. Cheers!

Mike from the Manic Pop Thrills blog is one of the world’s biggest authorities on all things Kristin Hersh.

Now you mention it, I think I have read quite a few things on MPT about her…

God yeah , i absolutly love this song and wouldn’t you know it i totally forgot about this one when i posted a womans music compilation that I made up on
http://www.raremp3.co.uk/2009/03/roddus-music-sampler-volume-03.html. Also another very cool song she did was “Sno Cat”. Any way check out that music sampler ,there are some very cool tracks on it and I have 3 other samplers posted there as well.

Alongside the devastating ‘The Letter’, this track has to be one of the most wonderful tracks with which to conjure up imagery and narrative.
