The Very Best…the LP of the summer?

image001

OK, slightly presumptuous, but the second track I have heard from the forthcoming album by The Very Best, MTMTMK, out on July 16, suggest it could well be.

I’ve already posted the video to their last single “Yoshua Alikuti” here. That is a tune, as is this: ‘Kondaine.’

Disclaimer: a goat is sacrificed (as part of traditional Turkana ceremonies, not in a ‘let’s patronise African folk’ way), the band visit a witch doctor and trip out in the desert.

I suspect you are unlikely to see this video on daytime TV anytime soon (actually, you rarely see Music videos on so-called Music TV these days, but anyway…)

MTMTMK is released 16th July on Moshi Moshi Records

EP review: Louise Quinn & Kid Loco

Louise Quinn & Kid Loco -‘Oh Jackie EP’ (Tremolo Records)

Although credited to Louise Quinn and Kid Loco, this is, it would apppear, very much a new release by A Band Called Quinn.

But irrespective who it’s by, the important thing that you need to know is that this is a gorgeous release. It draws on Scottish indie, French pop and the legendary Dorothy Fields (who co-wrote the EP’s second track ‘Exactly Like You.’ Louise has collaborated with Kid Loco on several of his albums, and the ante is upped even further by the third track ‘Ghosts From The War’ remixed by Glasweigian jazz legend, Bill Wells (yes, as in the man who collaborated both with Isobel Campbell and Aidan Moffat).

This EP exudes cool, class and sophistication but most of all, it just oozes greatness.

Make sure you check it out.

Album Review: Neil Young

Neil Young and Crazy Horse -‘Americana’ (Reprise)

So, let’s get the obvious pointers out of the way first. This is Neil Young’s 33rd solo album since his first, 1969’s self-titled debut. It is also the first time he has united with his longtime backing band Crazy Horse since 2003’s Greendale.

If you’d only ever heard one or two albums by Neil Young, it would be easy to try and pigeonhole him. But impressively, over four decades in music (getting onto five), he has sought not so much to reinvent himself as to continue to explore new avenues. Americana has been spoken of as being one of his more ‘unusual’ records (see also: Everybody’s Rockin’, Trans etc..) Yes, he has long been considered to produce records that would be considered ‘folk’ but also he has experimented with far rockier sounds (see his last album, the rather fine Le Noise, Ragged Glory). And on this album, the two come together.

The album is comprised of eleven folk songs, many of which as Young points out, are songs that they (he and Crazy Horse) would have learned in Kindergarten, plus finishing with ‘God save The Queen’ which would originally have been the de facto american National Anthem, until Independence. Rather wisely, there is no sound of the controversial ‘Rebellious Scots to crush’ line that appeared in early versions of this song. The songs presented are not pastiche, nor novelty, but rather Young and co.’s interpretation of them in their own style.

The album opens with ‘O Susanna’ – if there’s meant to be any reference to the infamous spat between Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd it’s not here), ‘I’ve come from Alabama with my B.A.N.J.O. on my knee.’ It’s not twee, it is Young and it is great. ‘Gallows Pole’ appears on investigation to be even older (0and possibly of European origin), and was performed by Led Zeppelin in the 1970s. ‘Jesus’ Chariot’ is probably better known on this side of the Atlantic as ‘She’ll Be Coming Round The Mountain’, while ‘Clementine’ as long been reworded as a playground song (‘build a bonfire, build a bonfire, stick the teachers on the top/Stick *** in the middle and then burn the bloody lot!’).

Sure, these are ‘folk songs’ as in belonging to the people, rather than just having an acoustic guitar on them. The band truly make these their own -and if this is seen as being one of Young’s more ‘diffifult’ or ‘unusal’ albums, it’s a heck of a lot easier to get to grips with than most.

Album Review: Liars

liars

Liars ‘WIXIW’ (Mute)

It’s been ten years since Liars first appeared. At the time, they were bracketed with the likes of The Rapture, !!!, Radio 4, LCD Soundsystem and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs as part of a new wave of dance-punk out of New York (in fact, the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s ‘Maps’ was written about singer Karen O’s relationship with then boyfriend Angus Andrew of Liars). The reality is that while all these acts have produced some amazing moments, none of the rest of them could keep up with Liars’ ability to reinvent themselves with each release. Not in terms of having characters a la Bowie (or Madonna, at a push), but in terms of the fact that six albums into their career, each release stands on its’ own merits. Distinctively different, distinctively Liars.

On WIXIW (it’s pronounced ‘Wish you,’ in case you were wondering) their sound continues to evolve, without the mistake that some acts make of assuming that evolve mist mean casting off the rough egdes that first make an act interesting, and refining their sound. because they can still experimwnt with harsh sound, make no mistake about it. But they can also have their moments of lushness, and Liars show that the two can coexist on one of their records quite happily.

First single ‘No.1 Against The Rush’ gives a good idea of what to expect (and this has Liars battling with Spiritualzied for X-rated video of the year). But it’s only part of the story. So few bands continue to innovate, experiment and grow with each release. Liars do.

And that’s the, um, truth.

WIXIW is released on Mute on June 4.

last-battle-single

Following on from Last year’s Springwell EP, The Last Battle have been back in the studio working on their sophomore album.

The first fruits of these sessions is a new single ‘Hope Is Gold’ which will be released later on this month.

On cassette, no less!

In the meantime, they have made the b-side ‘The Crunching’ available to download for free. It’s very very good indeed -and I mean this as a compliment – very different from anything else they have done before.

The launch night for the single takes place on June 22 at Pilrig St Paul’s Church Hall in Leith, with support from William Henry Miller, Star Wheel Press and Where We Lay Our Heads

Amongst the other forthcoming live dates they have are LeithLate 2 at Elvis Shakespeare on Leith Walk, Edinburgh on June 28,where they will be playing with Edinburgh School For The Deaf and Blueflint.
