Hooray hooray, another (much-needed) holiday

Hallelujah, now on holiday and no teaching to be done for eleven days.

Don’t get me wrong, I (mostly) love my job, but it’s considerably more tiring than working in a record shop. Long term I hope it will be more rewarding too.

As for how it compares with running a record label, well, thanks to anyone who has bought Aberfeldy’s ‘Claire’ single off iTunes – thanks because it’s good ol’ 17 Seconds records’ very first release, and if you have, please go and leave us feedback. In the UK, it seems to be the second most popular Aberfeldy track on there after ‘Summer’s Gone.’

Anyway, some sublime pop from My Bloody Valentine now…

My Bloody Valentine -‘We Have All The Time In the World.’ mp3

My Bloody Valentine -‘Paint A Rainbow.’ mp3

Do keep an eye on the blog, as it will get more updates more frequently over the next wee while, as I try to work my way through a rather large pile of review CDs!

My Bloody Valentine reform!

The news is spreading across the blogs -My Bloody Valentine have reformed!

The shoegazing pioneers, without whom no Slowdive, no Lush, no Blur (go back at listen to Leisure), no Curve, no Ride… you get the picture. They’re back! And they are working on a new album, which may be ready this year.

I first read about this yesterday at The Yellow Stereo. This news was apparently from the mouth of Kevin Shields himself, and their website which is being worked on by Debbie Goodge, the bassist. They also have an official Myspace here.

Read more about this at: Hate Something Beautiful, and Minneapolis Fucking Rocks.

Tempting as it is to post tracks off their seminal albums Isn’t Anything and Loveless, I thought I would offer you some alternate treats.

The first is their Peel Session from the great man’s show in 1988 (these were taped off the radio, so not only do you get mbv but you hear the great man’s voice, too!)

My Bloody Valentine -‘I Can See It (But I Can’t Feel It) (Peel session).’ mp3

My Bloody Valentine -‘Lose My Breath (Peel session).’ mp3

My Bloody Valentine -‘(When you Wake) You’re Still In A Dream (Peel session).’ mp3

My Bloody Valentine -‘Feed Me With Your Kiss (Peel session).’ mp3

And a couple of b-sides –

My Bloody Valentine -‘Honey Power.’ mp3(from the Tremolo EP)

My Bloody Valentine -‘Moonlight.’ mp3 (from the Geek EP)

And, finally, a very early track that appeared on the Rough Trade Indiepop 1 compilation a couple of years ago

My Bloody Valentine -‘Paint A Rainbow.’ mp3

These are through FileDen. Please leave feedback!

In the morning

Finally!

After a few days of what seems like rains of Biblical proportions in Scotland over the last few days, the soon to be Mrs.17 Seconds and I woke up to find the sun shining.

How else to mark it, but…these:

Some Covers For Saturday

Hello again.

Had a few computer problems that are now fixed, so here are some covers for Saturday.

This year, as well as being the thirtieth anniversary of the first Sex Pistols and Clash albums (alright, smarty pants; so the Sex Pistols only released one album proper but you know what I meant), is also the anniversary of David Bowie’s most productive year, when he relased his own Low and Heroes, as well as his important contributions to Iggy Pop’s The Idiot and Lust For Life. However, that will have to be a post for a future, er, post. Here are three covers that should be heard, taken from a freebie CD with Uncut four years ago.
The Langley Schools Music Project take on ‘Space Oddity’ is chilling, in a nice sort of way, the Black Box Recorder version of ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide’ is definitely made their own, and the associates ‘Boys Keep Swinging’ was famously released – as their debut single – mere months after Bowie’s original came out in 1979.

Associates-‘Boys Keep Swinging (David Bowie cover).’ mp3

Langley Schools Music Project-‘Space Oddity (David Bowie cover).’ mp3

Black Box Recorder -‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide (David Bowie cover).’ mp3

This was recorded live at the Reading Festival when the White Stripes had to pull out at short notice. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club do this fantastically.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club -‘The Hardest Button To Button (White Stripes cover).’ mp3

This cover was originally recorded, I believe for a compilation intended to promote peace in Northern ireland called Peace Together (and if anyone has mp3s of Therapy? doing ‘Invisible Sun’ and Pop Will Eat Itself doing ‘Games Without Frontiers’ please get in touch).

My Bloody Valentine -‘We Have All The Time In The World (Louis Armstrong cover).’ mp3

Finally, it was a hit, easily obtainable, but what a joy to hear!

Futureheads-‘The Hounds Of Love (Kate Bush cover).’ mp3

Okay, you know the drill. these will be up here for a week only. If you like what you hear, support the artists involved.
