Happy Birthday Brother Seconds!

birthday-cake2

This post should have been up yesterday -but a happy (belated) birthday to brother 17 Seconds!

His favourite band ever are The Proclaimers, although he also loves The Cure, David Bowie, Tom Waits, The Smiths, Nick Drake, Miles Davis and lots more cool stuff besides.

So this is for you, our kid:

…and you can watch the original video right here

In my defence, I was out celebrating with him in Glagsow’s West End last night, so he wasn’t forgotten…; )

…and thinking ahead to Saturday, let’s hope it’s Sunshine on Leith and not ‘Mah heart is broken (AGAIN!)’

Album review – Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus -‘Cosmogramma’ (Warp)

Warp records have put out some pretty mind-blowing records over the years. They have released msuic by the likes of !!!, Squarepusher, Battles and most famously Aphex Twin.

This album, by Flying Lotus, is little short of astounding, and definitely up there with the likes of Music Has The Right To Children and the ‘Windowlicker’ single. Flying Lotus is the nephew of the visionary Alice Coltrane and her spirit is right through this album. But to describe this as a Jazz record or an elctronica record or a Hip-hop record…these would all be clutching at straws.

Bceause this album -at 46 minutes one which would just about have fitted on an old c90 cassette -is so out there it’s not true. yet at the same time, so utterly listenable and enjoyable. Some albums you have to listen to a few times before you review them, because you’re convinced you might not have picked up on something the first time. Thisis an album that I could listen to one hundred times or more -and I’m confident that I will -and still pick up something new each time. Oh, and amongst other contributors it includes Erykah Badu and Thom Yorke, which is pretty cool. And gives an idea of just how diverse a record this is.

Utterly pioneering and a classic in the making. Think not so much Exile on Main Street or (What’s The Story?) Morning Glory; rather think Are You Experienced?, Roxy Music, Endtroducing, It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back…and most of what Miles Davis produced between 1956 and 1970. That great. That important.

What you waiting for?

Album review – The Zephyrs

The Zephyrs -‘Fool of Regrets’ (Club AC30)

The press release for this album describes The Zephyrs as ‘psychedelic magicians.’ While many press releases are a complete load of rubbish and hyperbole, this is actually completely accurate and spot on.

The band’s fifth album, and a return after a hiatus of a few years, this album is little short of magical. Imagine a band who set up camp along the borders alt. country, shoegazing, the best traditions of scottish indie -and remembered to write songs along the way. That’s The Zephyrs on this album. It’s an album that I’ve played a lot and will continue to do so for a long time to come. It grabs you right from the opening track ‘Creative Faith’ and holds you until the closing ‘Sole in The Machine [sic].’

Featuring contributions from, amongst others, Mogwai’s Barry Burns and Super Furry Animals’ Gruff Rhys, who appear on second track ‘Wet Outside Dry In Here’ this is an incredibly strong album. Do not let it pass under your radar. Stop it; ask it its’ purpose and join the journey…

Why is pop a dirty word?

album_cant_get_you_out_of_my_head

For many years, I felt guilty about liking shiny pop music. Always felt I had to justify it.

But as someone once pointed out, it isn’t about the battle between ‘pop’ and ‘indie’ it’s about the battle between good and bad music. Which is very true.

Because, quite frankly, this is an awesome tune. I took stick for liking Kylie for many years, and pointed out that she did -and continues to do some classic stuff.

…and I’d sooner listen to this than a lot of the run of the mill ‘Oasis changed our lives’ indie bands.

…or do some of you still feel the need for this (admittedly great) cover version to feel okay about liking it?!

Kylie’s latest single ‘For All The Lovers’ is also great, even if I’m not impressed by the album.

Presenting…She’s Hit

shes-hit

It’s a little odd not to be doing a radio show when it’s Thursday night.

Still, the band that I started my show with last week are She’s Hit, who hail from Glasgow.

Including Scott Paterson of Sons & Daughters on bass, the band also features Div Wilson, Cammy Wilson, Mike Hanson and
Philip McLellan.

They’re running their own label, Re:peater Records, and this will form the debut release on October 18, a split single with Jacob Yates and the Pearly Gate Lock Pickers (led by the lead singer of the much-missed Uncle John and Whitelock).

It won’t surprise you that this band have been compared to the likes of Suicide, the Birthday Party and the Jesus and Mary Chain. On this evidence (and that of their myspace) they really ARE that good.

Turn it up. This is a five star single, up there with the best releases this year.

Album review – Mogwai

Mogwai -‘Special Moves’ (Rock Action)

Given that Mogwai have a (well-deserved) reputation for awesome live shows, it’s perhaps a little odd that this is their first, a mere fiteen years into their career. No matter. When it’s as good as Special Moves, it really is worth it.

It really is worth getting the vinyl box set (I’m going to starve for the next month and it will be worth it) – or the deluxe download package in order to hear the whole thing. Like the best live albums, it is not just a simple replaying of the albums, but shows just how great the band are live, and is a great album in its’ own right. ‘Like Herod’ still make you jump at THAT point (it is possibly the audio equivalent of that scene in Carrie.

All five of their studio albums from the last thirteen years or so are represented, rather than just being based on one or two albums. This album is yet more proof – if confirmation were needed by now – that Mogwai really are one of the best acts of the last twenty years. A new album is due next year – bring it on…

Album review – Cold Seeds

King Creosote, Meursault and Animal Magic Tricks -‘Cold Seeds.’ (Song, By Toad Records)

This is clearly the year of painfully cool collaborations (see also: Burns Unit). Cold Seeds is Kenny Anderson (AKA King Creosote), Neil Pennycook (of Meursault, who also features on the forthcoming debut album from the Last Battle), Frances Donnelly (AKA Animal Magic Tricks), and cellist Pete Harvey who plays with both Meursault and The Leg.

This album was recorded over two weekends last year at Song, By Toad HQ. It was literally recorded live in the living room -and you can hear Floyd the cat on the first track (he’s a Maine coon, and absolutely gorgeous). This whole album is a lo-fi gem. You may have heard ‘Crank Resolutions’ on the most recent Meursault album (I certainly hope you have by now) and King Creosote’s ‘By 11 o’clock she’d left,’ one of my favourite songs of his. Both songs appear performed by the artists together, in radically different form. For my money, the highlight of the album is the King Creosote-led version of Donnelly’s song ‘the Perfume Of Mexican Birds.’

It is as lofi as anything, and that will probably put some people off. Their loss. This is a document of what sounds like two wonderful weekends and something you oughta hear if you have any interest in the current scottish music scene, and indeed, beyond.
