Album Review – Broken Records

Broken-Records-Wights-And-Pulleys

Broken Records -‘Weights and Pulleys.’ (J Sharp Records)

Nearly seven years ago, my first encounter with Broken Records was when all seven of them (as there were, then) walked on stage at Edinburgh’s Cabaret Voltaire and I wondered how they were all going to fit. That night they were supporting the newly solo Emma Pollock – and although they were unsigned, it was clear there was something truly great about them.

Fast forward seven years. The band released

two fantastic albums through 4AD, then things went rather quiet. But last year there were stirrings, followed by the release earlier this year of a new EP, Toska. And now, four years since their sophomore album, Let Me Come Home, they drop their third album.

It’s reassuring to say that they still sound like Broken Records (once memorably described as being like if Nirvana came from Belarus), they’ve continued to progress and this album has been worth the four year wait. By the

end of the opening track ‘Ditty (We Weren’t Ready)’ it’s clear that whatever they’ve been up to in the meantime, they’re back and firing on all cylinders.

It always pained me that they weren’t bigger than they were. Whilst Stadia and arenas are fairly soulless places to watch live music (and to perform as well, I suspect) in my head they were a band who deserved to amass the sort of fanbase to fill those sort of places. And there’s still time for them to do that. It’s impressive to hear a band who can do epic so well and not sound pompous or smug.

Welcome back, boys.

One of the things about the internet in the near two decades I’ve been using it is that it is possibly to lose huge chunks of your life checking out stuff. As I write I’m streaming music by the fabulous William Basinski that I haven’t ever seen to buy. That’s via Deezer, but a place where I could lose decades of my life (if I didn’t need to be grounded by the practical realities of this world that I really value), is Ubuweb.

Call it an archive, call it a repository, it’s there to help preserve things that might get lost

Album Review – Soledad Vélez

Soledad Vélez -‘Run With Wolves’ (Absolute Beginners)

Hailing from Valencia, Soledad Vélez’s debut album, Wild Fishing, suggested that here was most definitely not just another singer-songwriter. (Thank God for that.) She drew on folk and blues, and produced a record that suggested her spiritual heirs were more like Cat Power or PJ Harvey.

e’s still a fair amount of darkness here – but without losing anything of what made that album quite a startling listen. It’s perhaps an easier album to get to grips with, and one which suggests that she is developing as a songwriter and performer.

Album opener ‘On Fire’ and ‘South Mountain’ may be the best places to start, but this is an impressive sophomore album, and I look forward to seeing which direction she heads on her third album.

Album Review – Gruff Rhys

Gruff Rhys

Gruff Rhys – ‘American Interior.’ (Turnstile)

Sometime Super Furry Animals singer Gruff Rhys isn’t a man to do things by halves. His fourth solo album is also an app, a book and a film. It’s inspired by a distant relative of his called John Evans, who ‘left Wales for Baltimore in 1792 and walked into the wilderness of the Allegheny mountains in search of a lost tribe of Welsh-speaking Native Americans, believed to be the descendants of Prince Madog.’

Now, that’s pretty brilliant just written down. I have yet to encounter book, film or app (to the best of my knowledge these

order artvigil online in the best USA pharmacy www.archbrows.com/videoimages/wiki/wiki-artvigil.html no prescription with fast delivery drugstore

weren’t on offer to reviewers), but the album is fantatsic. It’s inspired by Evans’ original journey.

The title track’s been picking up airplay on 6Music, and is a pretty great tune on its own, but ultimately it makes even more sense as part of this lovely album. Now into his third decade of making music, Rhys is as much a renaissance man as Damon Albarn (I mean that as a compliment) who has the songs and voice to go with the vision. Just as the Proclaimers were proud to sing in Scottish accents, so Rhys is proud to sing in his Welsh accent, and unravel this strange and fascinating tale.

Punk’s (s

Album Review – The Last Battle

The Last Battle 2014

The Last Battle -‘Lay Your Burden Down.’ (Beard Of Truth)

Edinburgh’s The Last Battle, formed from the ashes of Thieves In Suits, managed the impressive feat of releasing their debut album Heart Of the Land, Soul Of The Sea a year to the day since their

first gig. It was a stunning album, and the final ‘Soul Of The Sea’ remains one of the most beautiful songs ever to grace this scribe’s ears.

In the intervening years, there have been singles, EPs (check their bandcamp pageand line-up changes, but the thing that remains on their sophomore album is the vision of songwriter Scott Longmuir. The band have gigged with the likes of King Creosote, Withered Hand, Kid Canaveral, Meursault and eagleowl (if these names mean nothing to you, then for shame!). Without wishing to undersell their debut, that was a gorgeous lo-fi folk record; here they’ve worked with an outsider producer and shown that polish needn’t be a bad thing. It’s got the essence of The Last Battle but The Last Battle Version 2.0 shows that they can look to other influences without losing the sense of what it is that they are about.

Thus ‘You & Me’ shows a Vaselines’ influence, while ‘The Crunching’ shows drummer Liam O’Hare drawing on hip-hop influences. Another interim cover was Warren G’s ‘Regulate’ which they pulled off with aplomb, along with their take on Nirvana’s ‘Pennyroyal Tea.’ ‘Perfecting The Art (Of Saying Nothing’ and ‘Wh

erever Our Feet Take Us’ have already done the rounds as singles, and the end result is an album that is a confident leap on from their debut.

For too many years, Edinburgh has been perceived as playing second fiddle to Glasgow. No longer -and with their sophomore album, The Last Battle lead the charge. And as for a third album, in your own time, guys and girl, in your own time.
