Presenting…Casino Brag

casino-brag

I’ve always been of the belief that a debut single should sound like a manifesto.

And Casino Brag are right on the money with their download single ‘Viennese Disco’/’A Fair Escape.’ It nods to Glasgow contemporaries like the 1990s and Franz Ferdiand, but you can also hear the effects of their proclaimed influences like Kate Bush and The Cure when you listen to a track like ‘Apparitions’ and ‘Authority

Featuring David (Rhythm Guitar and

and John Paul (Bass and Backing Vocals), one listen to their myspace alone was enough to convince me to go and buy their download single. They’re currently unsigned, but on the evidence of what I hear on their myspace (and what the likes of Jim Gelattly and Tom Robinson, who have als

o supported the single), this surely cannot remain that way for long. On this evidence, I expect big things from these guys and very soon.

They are playing with 17 Seconds Records’ very own Dirty Cuts later on this Month, amongst a host of forthcoming dates:

17 April Nice and Sleazys, Glagsow w/The Dirty Cuts & Galoshins; 24 April The Flying Duck, Glasgow; 15 May 2010 The Captains Rest, Glasgow w/Foxgang and Sebastian Dangerfield; 18 May Hope and Anchor, Islington; 19 May Death Disco@Notting Hill Arts Club London; 18 Jun SuSu@The Wee Red Bar; Edinburgh.

Go and make friends with them on myspace; watch this video and go and buy the single!

Paul Haig Day II

paul-haig

I’m proud to be taking part in Paul Haig Day II, wherein we pay tribute to one of the most talented singers and musicians ever to emerge out of Scotland.

Paul Haig was the lead singer in Josef K, the seminal Edinburgh band, who were at the forefront of Scotland’s post-punk scene, along with bands like the Scars, the Fir

e Engines, Orange Juice, Aztec Camera and most famous of all, the Associates, featuring Paul’s best friend, the late Billy Mackenzie. When Josef K split in 1981, the band’s guitarist Malcolm Ross joined Orange Juice. It was that sort of scene.

Paul Haig has had a fine solo career subsequently, and the last decade saw Josef K start to get their dues as Franz Ferdiannd, probably the most important Scottish band of the decade, paid tribute to them (and indeed the Fire Engines). The sleeve notes to the fine Entomology compilation album pay tribute to Franz Ferdinand ‘without whom this release may never have seen the light of day.’

In March 2009, my friend JC, who writes The Vinyl Villain (who single-handedly

Both Paul and his manager Euan got in touch with Jim to say they were bemused by this, as they had not asked for a takedown. In fact, Paul was totally up for bloggers to make tracks of his available for download. So April 6 2009 became the first Paul Haig day, and because of the success of this, JC has repe

In the time between, Paul has released another fine solo album , entitled Relive and I was dead chuffed to be the first person to interview him about the album (this was according to the man himself. It was chance rather than design, but pretty cool, noneth

Album Review – Dum Dum Girls

Dum Dum Girls -‘I Will Be’ (Sub Pop)

The Dum Dum Girls won’t get many points for originality.

There I got that out of the way – the obvious point that people are going to make. Sure you’ve heard many of these ideas before – fifties rock’n’roll, sixties girl groups and garage punk, seventies punk attitude, eighties indie and nineties shoegaze. Yet, it’s the freshness of the approach that startles here. If you’re going to get hung up on the concept of originality the whole time with music you’re going to miss a whole heap of pleasure.

The Dum Dum Girls, lead by Dee Dee have a real love of classic pop music (Check their covers of the Stones ‘Playing With Fire ‘ –

the b-side to ‘Jail La La’ and this album’s cover of Sonny Bono’s ‘Baby Don’t Go’) and they’ve arrived with their debut long-player hot on the heels of quite a few acts taking advantage of c86-style indie pop’s current reappearance from the underground (see also Vivian Girls, Best Coast, Girls and most obviously, the Pains Of Being Pure At Heart). The first single ‘Jail La la’ you’ve hopefully heard by now, and gives a good idea of what to expect.

But it’s not just the uptempo numbers; ‘Blank Girl’ is a good example of how they can do heartbreaking, weepy numbers that reaffirm your faith in pop music even as it’s breaking you heart. The album’s barely more than thirty minutes long and in doing so, it’s got no

flab, just sheer fun, fun, fun.

Oh – and if you buy it on vinyl, it’s got a really nice marble and black effect (and free downloads). Support your local record shop.

Presenting…Beneath Us, The Waves

beneath-us-the-waves

Beneath Us, The Waves is the work of Scottish musician and composer Neil Milton, currently living in Warsaw, Poland. His music ha

s been described as both “glacial” ambient soundscapes and minimalist classical music. This is a pretty accurate description, I would say (and this is meant as a compliment) that he is the missing link between Fennesz, Mogwai and Virginia Astley. He has have recently scored music to accompany a promo film for the Glasgow Tramway theatre, entitled ‘Elegy For Tramway.’ Not only that, but he is working on strings accompaniments for a few Scottish bands, most notably for Kays Lavelle frontman, Euan McMeeken’s solo e.p. out which will be released later this Spring. He is currently unsigned, but surely cannot be for long…not with music as jaw-droppingly, heartbreaklingly beautiful as this.

He’s also a very nice chap, I met him a couple of days ago DJing at bart eagleowl’s night at the Roxy Art House here in Edinburgh. He will also be playing with 17 Seconds Records act The Last Battle at Stereo in Glasgow on April 12.

He’s also generously sent me an mp3 for readers to download, and I’ve also lifted a few tracks from his soundcloud page for your streaming pleasure.

The next release from the label will be the ‘One EP’ by the Factory Kids. This will be available as a five-track download EP from all good download stores from April 12, and this is 17SEC18, our fourteenth musical release as a label. Aberfeldy, Escape Act and The Wildhouse have all been getting studio tans (!), and both The Last Battle and David Scott albums should be out over the next few months. There will also be more stuff to come from X-Lion Tamer very soon…

If you read the post below you will see that we’re very involved with Tigerfest this year, with X-Lion Tamer, Chris Bradley, The Dirty Cuts, the Wildhouse and The Last Battle making appearances.

And before the month is out, a very special night at Limbo in Edinburgh. See the poster at the top!

Tigerfest 2010 is go!

x-lion-tamer-2010

Last year, Tigerfest 2009 had a 17 Seconds Records night, which featured Aberfeldy and X-Lion Tamer (above).

This year, yours truly has been involved in putting the festival together, alongside Neil and Stuart who have done it since its’ inception in 2004.

The line-up this year is truly spectacular, and the Edinburgh leg (with Dunfermline to be announced very soon) takes place between May 5-14.

Amongst those playing are (deep breath): Martin Stephenson, There Will be Fireworks, Jesus H. Foxx, Emily Scott, Midas Fall, The Gothenburg Address, TV21, Alex Cornish, Andi Neate, Andy Tucker, Casey, the Stantons, the Boycotts and Phoebe Kreutz. Over the TWO 17 Seconds nights the following will be appearing from the label: X-Lion Tamer, The Last Battle, Chris Bradley, The Dirty Cuts and The Wildhouse.
