Three years ago, one of the acts I championed were Dunfermline’s The Sco
ttish Enlightenment. They
released a fine three track EP called Eyes -and whilst I would see occasional references to them in gig listings, I was left wondering whether they would follow that EP up.
Well, they have -and this five track EP is called the Pascal EP and it’s excellent (****). Also championed by Matthew over at Song, By Toad, (who played them on his show) this EP is five magnifiecently moody pieces of prime scots indie. Armellodie Records have done themselves proud yet again (and this having just released the debut from Kill The Captains and the latest Super Adventure Club al
bum too, to say nothing of the fine Cuddly Shark album). The thought persists that if Biffy Clyro can go top five, why not the Scottish En

lightenment?
Reportedly these songs haven’t made the forthcoming album. My brain’s aching at the thought of just how good it might be…
Another EP and their debut album are to follow this year. In the meantime, enjoy this:

OK folks, tis the last reminder I will post, but Tigerfest is underway, and tonight and Thursday are the 17 Seconds Records nights in Edinburgh.
£6 a throw, and with X-Lion Tamer, The Wildhouse and White Heath (not ours, but fabulous anyway!) tonight and Chris Bradley, the Dirty Cuts and the Last battle on Thursday…what more could you ask for?

It’
s a very confusing time here in the UK.
The General Election was two days ago, people are trying to sort out deals, and no-one’s feeling
like they really got the result they wanted. (Apart from the far right taking a hammering, thank God). An American journalist said he thought it was more confusing than the rules of cricket -well, it seems like a lot of people are confused.
*Sigh*
This seems oddly appropriate. We don’t know whether to laugh, sigh, or despair. I’ve mostly had the Radio on in the car trying to work out what’s
happening. Except no-one knows.

Tigerfest begins today in Edinburgh.
Very excited and looking forward to tonight’s first gig.
Please note: the Phoebe Kreuz gig on Thursday May 6 has had to be cancelled as the band are stranded in Berlin due to Volcanic Ash.
Also: the Gothenburg Address are unable to play on May 9, and their place has been taken by White Heath.
With a look ahead to tonight’s
gig…

In a couple of days Tigerfest starts, and I’m really looking forward to it. there’s been some great support and coverage -and a few people who could have supported us and lent us their help, but didn’t (not the ones who are off gigging abroad…anyway).
I missed the opportunity to meet Lloyd From Peenko the other night, though it was great to finally meet Jason Pop Cop. Lloyd has given a lot of support to 17 seconds acts -and if you follow this link you will get the oppportunity to dow
nload three of the four radio sessions they have recorded for scottish radio this year.
They also recorded a session for Matthew AKA Song, By Toad, who does more to help the cause of new bands in Edinburgh than I can I dream of.
..check out the Song, By Toad blog for features Matthew has done on them and download their

The Last Battle will be playing Tigerfest on May 13, supporting Chris Bradley on a bill also featuring The Dirty Cuts. They also play The Leith Tape Club this Thursday.

It’s approaching Election Day in Britain this week, which affects Scotland (obviously!) and whilst there haven’t been a lot of great political songs to reach my ears of late, this is still pertinent.
From 1989, the still astonishing ‘Tramp the Dirt Down’ by Elvis Costello.
‘I saw a newspaper picture from the political campaign
A woman was kissing a child, who was obviously in pain
She spills with compassion, as that young child’s face in her hands she grips
Can you imagine all that greed and avarice coming down on that child’s lips?
Well I hope I don’t die too soon, I pray the Lord my soul to save
Yes, I’ll be a good boy, I’m trying so hard to behave
Because there’s one thing I know, I’d like to live long enough to savour
That’s when they finally put you in the ground
I’ll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down
When England was the whore of the world, Margaret was her madam
And the future looked as bright and as clear as the black tarmacadam
Well I hope that she sleeps well at night, isn’t haunted by every tiny detail
When she held that lovely face in her hands all she thought of was betrayal
And now the cynical ones say that it all ends the same in the long run
Try telling that to the desperate father who just squeezed the life from his only son
And how it’s only voices in your head and dreams you never dreamt
Try telling him the subtle difference between justice and contempt
Try telling me she isn’t angry with this pitiful discontent
When they flaunt it in your face as you line up for punishment
And then expect you to say “Thank you”, straighten up, loo
k proud and pleased
Because you’ve only got the symptoms, you haven’t got the whole disease
Just like a schoolboy, whose head’s like a tin-can
Filled up with dreams then poured down the drain
Try telling that
to the boys on both sides, being blown to bits or beaten and maimed
Who takes all the glory but none of the shame?
Well I hope you live long now, I pray the Lord your soul to keep
I think I’ll be going before we fold our arms and start to weep
I never thought for a moment that human life could be so cheap
But when they finally put you in the ground
They’ll stand there laughing and tramp the dirt down’

The Dirty Cuts will return with their second si
ngle ‘Yummy Mummy’ in July.
If the lyrics of previous single ‘2 Page Spread’ might have seemed slightly risque to those of sensitive bent (‘I want teen sex/I want mean sex/I want magazin
e glitz, I want super tits) then this is even more so, with its’ tale of the salacious Upper class lady who seduces a young man with her ‘upper class confidence/filthy carnal dominance’ in her 4X4. all together now: ‘She’s classy, she’s sassy/like Jackie Onassis.’
Having been burning the midnight oil last night in Glasgow with Billy and Matt from the band, they have graciously said that I can give this remix of ‘Yummy Mummy’ away for free. Having recorded their demos with Chris ‘Beans’ Geddes from Belle and Sebastian, they continue to work with the cream of the Glasgow indie scene, as this remix is courtesy of the 1990s’ Dino Bardot.
The single (17SEC19) is scheduled for release on July 26. It will be a double A-side with ‘Tricks.’
