Box sets can be tricky beasts. Rather like ‘Greatest Hits’ compilations they tend to be made up very largely of stuff that has been released before. However, unlike ‘Greatest Hits

‘-type packages, they generally serve as a cherry on the top for collectors of the work therein, rather than serving as an introduction. Quite often the enticement may also be fantastic sleevenotes, and these are reportedly written by Paul Morley, who is in his element doing anything Manchester and Factory, I should imagine…I say imagine, because the 4CD review copy does not come with these, so what might have served as a major incentive for this reviewer isn’t there.

So let’s focus on the music and the legend. It’s strange to think that it is now more than thirty years since Factory was set up, in part by the

ry maverick TV presenter Tony Wilson, who was always seen as being the public face of the label. The times of this label ran from post-punk (even if it wasn’t called that then) through the rise of indie as an alternative to the eighties mainstream and to the acid house and rave era which meeting Factory head-on produced Madchester. The three most legendary bands on the label : Joy Division, New Order and Happy Mondays are well-represented here (four, seven and seven tracks apiece). The label’s only number single Englandneworder’s ‘World In Motion’ isn’t here – but perhaps it’s the other things that Factory produced that make this box set notable.

tio’s mutant funk laid the grounds for what would happen twenty-five years later with the DFA label. New Order’s various side projects are represented – Peter Hook’s Revenge, Steven Morris and Gillian Gilbert’s The Other Two (with their track ‘Tasty Fish’ -I swear to this day that this track reminds me of Saint Etienne), and of course Electronic. Electronic brought together Bernard Sumner with former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. Their first single ‘Getting Away With It’ also featured Neil Tennant from the Pet Shop Boys (which is rather lik

Tony Wilson didn’t sign the Stone Roses (as to whether any label could have coped with both those bands on the roster is debatable), and passed on The Smiths because he famously told Morrissey ‘Go away and write your novel, Stephen.’ Northside were signed to Factory, and they have probably been saved from being the most ridiculed band in 1990s indie by virtue of Menswe@r a few years later.

If the label wasn’t always having major hits, they were certainly able to recognise future massive

sellers, and both James and OMD made their debuts here. For me, the real joy has been discovering the reggae band Xodus whose song ‘English Black Boys’ I had never heard before, but surely belongs as a cousin of its’ times to Steel Pulse’s ‘Ku Klux Klan.’ The only band not represented are ESG due to ‘licensing’ (though their music is available through Soul Jazz in the UK, so get thee to thy playlist, if you feel the need to be completist).

The myths and legends surrounding the label are many – New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’ remains the biggest selling 12″ single of all ime, but due to the artwork, they lost five pence per copy (which adds up over two and a million copies). The Happy Mondays deciding to record their final album for Factory …Yes Please in Barbados and blowing the money on crack. Not having proper contracts with the bands, which was a wonderful and laudable ideal, and no help whatsoever when the recievers had to be called in that sad day in November 1992.

Yet Wilson was a visionary and for that he should be saluted. As should many of the bands included

So here’s a Hip-Hop classic from madvillain, the collaboration between MF Doom and Madlib, two ‘indie rappers.’ And no, they aren’t rapping over samples from Coldplay or Razorlight.

I first fell for this album because of the sleeve, which is cool as…but the tracks are just brillliant.

Like many films set in Scotland over the last ten years ago, it’s quirky, stylish and very dark, more in the vein of, say Shallow Grave, Hallam Foe, or Morvern Cellar than the likes of Local Hero. Anyway,

worth seeing (Fopp have it in stock for £3, but it’s worth more).

It finished with a gorgeous version of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ performed by Honeyroot, which I think I’d heard somewhere before, but had to track it down and post it here. Simple, stripped down, and very affecting:

“Legendary New London, CT trio the Condo Fucks returned to the stage last March after a long absence from the Tri-State Area’s c

oncert circuit. A secretive Hoboken rehearsal was recorded and is being released March 24, 2009 by Matador as the LP/CD, Fuckbook. Eschewing such Condo Fucks originals as ?Fuckin? Gary Sandy? and ?Let?s Get Rid Of New Haven?, the trio ? Georgia Condo (drums), Kid Condo (guitar), and James McNew (bass) ? instead tear through covers of The Small Faces, Richard Hell, Beach Boys, Electric Eels, Troggs, Flaming Groovies and Slade classics in the style that previously won them so much acclaim from the Nutmeg State?s music journalists and radio programmers all those years ago. In the go-go 1990s, the Condo Fucks released 4 titles on the Matador label (see right), some of which were prominently advertised on the inner sleeve of Yo La Tengo?s I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One. Sadly, these titles are long out of print and we are unable to provide t

The name rang a bell and I smelt a rat…the same rat I smelt when I’d read the names on the sleeve of Yo La tengo’s I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One LP, about these seminal bands who’d released records on Matador.

So I googled it …and Wiki came up…and it transpires it’s Yo La Tengo! Perverse buggers. The references to Hoboken should have alerted me.

Their album as the Condo Fucks, entitled Fuck Book, will be released on either

Album Review: Le Reno Amps

Le Reno Amps -‘Tear It Open’ (Drift Records)

At this stage of 2009, this sophomore album’s opening track ‘Outlaws’ is one of my contenders already for my track of 2009. As has already been reported, this is a mad stomp in the vein of the Birthday Party and Sons & Daughters. But what should probably be noted is that this is not the side to Le Reno Amps.

Whilst many bands claim to have many influences (and allow only one or two of them to shine through on their records, usually the most obvious ones), Le Reno Amps’ strength is that wildly different songs can sit next to each other. ‘Outlaws’ is followed by ‘If you Want A Lover’ which is like a slightly more countrified Bluetones firing on all cylinders, while track three ‘You Do Your

s Five. On paper this might sound like someone’s made a slightly insane compilation. Yet on album, this works amazingly well.

Over the course of elevn tracks what you have here is an album that has many standout tracks, to the extent that many could be singles and even though I haven’t seen them live yet, I’m now desperate to. Le Reno Amps are a scottish band full of passion, and to these ears, their time is is now. Give these tracks a listen, watch the videos (see th

17 Seconds Records…an update

17-seconds-records

So…this is where I blow my own trumpet again…having been the guest on Matthew from Song, By Toad’s guest on his show on Fresh Air FM in Edinburgh this evening, talking about blogging, and music and running record labels etc.. I now come home to do the same.

On March 9, 17SEC3 will be released, the download only (for now!) single from Ex Lion Tamer entitled ‘Neon Hearts.’ You can stream it here. This should be available from iTunes and eMusic, as well as many other download stores. Please buy it and support us.

Last night, the third act to sign to 17 Seconds Records, The Gillyflowers, were playing a support slot at Cabaret Voltaire in Edinburgh and pulled an excellent crowd. They were excellent and I felt particularly proud to have signed ’em.

This is them playing at the Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh, in December 2008, supporting Aberfeldy. Many thanks to Julia for posting this.

The Gillyflowers -‘Hollow.’

Oh, and our first act, Aberfeldy, are playing in Aberdeen on March 9.

Finally there are some 17 Seconds Records related evnts coming up…but you’ll have to keep checking back here or reading our website to find out what they are, as and when they’re announced… : ))

Oh, and the final song Toad played tonight was this. An excellent song with which to finish any show, or a blog post, for that matter.

Orange Juice -‘Felicity.’ mp3
