Covers in honour of Glastonbury

beyonce

OK folks…

this is not all Glasto-related, but unless you’ve been under a rock for the last six months, you will know that Beyonce is headlining Sunday night at Glastonbury this year.

There are people who think a pop act has no place at Glastonbury -they’re wrong. And three years ago, Mr. Beyonce, Jay-Z proved that he could blow the minds of the people at Glastonbury. I haven’t been in over a decade, but I enjoyed acts as diverse as Asian Dub Foundation, David Bowie, The Pet Shop Boys, Spearhead, Pulp, The Cure and Radiohead, to name but seven.

And if I was going this weekend, I’d be looking forward to Beyonce as much as Morrissey.

I hadn’t heard of Heike Has the Giggles until this morning, when their cover of Beyonce’s ‘Crazy In Love’ appeared in my inbox:

Heike Has The Giggles – Crazy In Love (BeyoncĂ© cover) by Foolica Records

Download it here

Manic Street Preachers -‘Umbrella (Rihanna cover).’ mp3

(Seriously, Glastonbury should get Rihanna one year)

The Streets -‘Your Song (Elton John cover).’ mp3

Carter USM -‘Rent (Pet Shop Boys cover).’ mp3

Sons & Daughters -‘Killer (Adamski/Seal cover).’ mp3

James -‘China Girl (David Bowie/Iggy Pop Cover).’ mp3

Kaiser Chiefs-‘Golden Skans (Klaxons cover).’ mp3

Katzenjammers -‘Cars (Gary Numan cover).’ mp3

Death Cab For Cutie -‘World Shut Your Mouth (Julian Cope cover).’ mp3

Susanna -‘Lay All Your Love On Me (Abba cover).’ mp3

As pants the heart for cool(ing) streams…

How did it take the record companies so long to figure out that they could let people hear the music in full (without those bloody adverts) without people not going and buying the records?

No doubt there is software that (illegally) allows people to rip it, but to be honest, I think what most people would liek is the chance to hear the record before it comes out without either a) wasting their money or b) picking up bugs or c)getting cease and desist notices.

Anyway, lots of great albums streaming around the net at the moment, starting with this, the new album from the Arctic Monkeys. It sounds like a return to form to these ears (not that Humbug was all that bad, really…). There is no doubt that the album cover looks rubbish (and let’s face it, it looked a bit stupid when Hard-Fi pulled the same ‘trick’ a few years back) -but don’t let that put you off the album.

If you’re so inclined there’s a guide from lead Monkey Alex Turner on the album right here on nme.com

A Christmas heart-breaker

darlene-love

I don’t know what the consensus is these days on Phil Spector’s A Christmas Gift To You – is he now as vilified as Gary Glitter? I don’t believe so, though I offer no defence for his actions. Whatever the man may have been like, there was some great music and that famous ‘Wall Of Sound.’

One of the best known songs from A Christmas Gift To You is ‘Christmas (Baby Plase Come Home),’ as performed by darlene Love. This has been covered on numerous occasions, some of them almost as old as the original, which is now 46 years old.
Darlene Love is still performing live. Another song recorded in 1992 ‘All Alone On Christmas’ turned up on the soundtrack to both Home Alone 2 and Love, Actually. She is due to be inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall Of Fame next year. About time.

So here are her original, and some notable covers:

Darlene Love -‘Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).’ mp3

U2 -‘Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).’ mp3

Arab Strap -‘Xmas (Baby please Come Home).’ mp3

Death Cab For Cutie -‘Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).’ mp3

Slow Club -‘Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).’ mp3

Songs For Christmas VIII

The Manic Street Preachers

so, for a change, here’s one new song this year. The Manic Street Preachers have made this available to those on their mailing list…and so why not share it?

Manic Street Preachers -‘Christmas Ghost.’ mp3

I don’t know much about the origin of the tune Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), but I have three versions of it, by U2 (who are the first band I heard do it), Death Cab For Cutie, and Scotland’s own Arab Strap:

U2 -‘Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).’ mp3

Death Cab For Cutie -‘Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).’ mp3

Arab Strap -‘Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).’ mp3

Enjoy. There will, naturally, be more tomorrow… : ))

Some Covers For Friday Part II

No reason for the picture above this post, other than that I stuck ‘Friday’ in Google Image and this was the picture I liked best off the first page.

Anyway, it’s the end of another long week, but I’m still alive, and still trying to organise wedding stuff with the soon-to-be Mrs. 17 Seconds.

Here are some covers for Friday. the first one I heard live a few months ago, but was brought to my attention by Liz over at the The Roaring Machine yesterday.

Camera Obscura-‘Super Trouper.’ mp3

Astrid Swan -‘When You Were Young.’ mp3

Le Tigre-‘I’m So Excited.’ mp3

Arcade Fire-‘Maps.’ mp3

CSS-‘One Way Or Another.’ mp3

Snow Patrol-‘Crazy In Love.’ mp3

Death Cab For Cutie-‘World Shut Your Mouth.’ mp3

Editors-‘French Disko.’ mp3

As always, if you like what you hear, support the artists. These links will be removed after a week.

Have a good one,
