Album Review – Withered Hand

withered-hand

Withered Hand -‘Good News’ (SL Records)

So, yes. This has been out for three months now. I’d been trying to buy a copy for ages, and then when all hope seemed gone, Ed Pybus who runs SL Records got in touch. They were waiting for fresh stock, but in the meantime, here was a free download copy. Bless you.

Withered Hand is the work of one man from Edinburgh, Dan Willson. Hotly acclaimed and rightly so, for his two EPs Religious Songs and You’re Not Alone, this album was produced by the legendary Kramer, who has worked with Low, Galaxie 500 and Daniel Johnstone. So, for starters, it sounds absolutely great.

But that’s far from being all. He writes great songs, does our Mr. Willson, neat melodies, but his overall strength is as a lyricist. ‘Religious Songs’ itself manages to gently work in (rather than cram) more lyrical ideas and thoughts in four and a half minutes than some people manage in an entire career. Themes about religion (the sense of someone who has found himself trapped in an evangelical church during a communion service comes across very strongly in this album, though I may be reading way too much into it), masturbation, love, sex…if anyone thinks that sincerity is dead in the British Isles and we’re all obssessed with being ironic, they should listen to this album. ‘I knew you so long I ran out of cool things to say’ he sings on ‘Religious Songs.’ I challenge any hipster to come out with a line as good as that. Or indeed ‘I beat myself off when I sleep on your futon/I walk in the rain with my second-hand suit on.’ It’s not, say, Rum Sodomy and the Lash, but you might not want to play this album in front of your grandparents or anyone of a slightly, shall we say, conservative nature.

Their loss, though. Because this album grabs you from the first listen. And it becomes as addictive as a Class-A drug (though presumably without the health side effects. I’m guessing). Over the last ten days this has barely been away from the stereo, and even though I got a copy for free I’m going to buy it again. Because that’s the kind of recognition and seal of approval it deserves. Songs like ‘Providence’ and ‘No Cigarettes’ should be heard by as many people as possible. SL Records may well have signed one of Scotland’s best ever songwriters. And you can quote me on that.

This was, deservedly, in many people’s end of year best of lists. And I’m now thinking these things should be done a little while later. Get yourself a copy, somehow.

Presenting…The Drums

the-drums

So, having spent the last month or so discussing the best of 2009, talk invariably turns to what 2010 has in store.

This week, on the cover of NME are American band The Drums. It’s easy to be cynical, after all, music magazines can sometimes fall flat on their faces. Menswe@r or Terris, anyone? Thought not.

However, I hope you’re prepared to put aside your prejudices, because the fact is that The Drums are very good indeed. Hailing from the US; Jonathan Pierce (vocals), Jacob Graham (guitar), Adam Kessler (guitar) and Connor Hanwick (drums) have combined a love of both the Beach Boys and The Cure and come up with something that sounds fresh and exciting. On myspace their influences includes The Shangri-La’s and Joy Division. Oh, and if you think they sound like a 80s goth copycat band, you’re wrong. Very wrong. I hear You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever and The Head On The Door. As well a reminders why in recent years I have fallen so hard for the music of both X-Lion Tamer and Swimmer One. Proof? Well, I’ve had their seven track EP Summertime! on almost constant repeat all day. Yes, they probably own Psychocandy, as we all should, but they’ve taken notes and done their own thing.

Don’t let the Hipsters put you off, this band are the real deal.

17 Seconds Records in 2010

Web

As promised…it looks set to be a bumper year for 17 Seconds Records.

There are quite a few 17 Seconds Records-related gigs taking place in Scotland and Ireland over the next few months, see our myspace page for more details. In January alone, the Dirty Cuts and the Wildhouse are playing live on the same bill with each other back to back in Glasgow and Dundee, X-Lion Tamer is playing in Edinburgh (a free gig, no less), Aberfeldy will be playing in Dundee, and Escape Act are tearing up five counties in Ireland.

The Dirty Cuts will release their first single ‘2 Page Spread’ on download on January 25, with the 7″ to follow, and they have gracioulsy allowed us to make the b-side available as a free download:

The Dirty Cuts -‘Lips.’ mp3

The following week, as announced, the Factory Kids will release EP1, with EP2 to follow later on in the year. All being well, February will see the re-issue, digitally of the first two Wildhouse LPs, Hyenas and Poet:Saint. Their third album, Jackson ’56 will be released later this year.

March will see the release of Chris Bradley‘s sophomore album At the Outpost, likely to be preceeded by another single (watch this space, as they say). We are also going to re-issue his debut, Voices, in remastered form, later on this year.

As for the first three acts we signed, let them not be forgotten either: Escape Act have finished recording sessions with the famed producer Andy Miller (Sons & Daughters, Mogwai and Delgados, amongst others) and are mastering their sophomore album, Aberfeldy have just two more songs to record for thier third album and X-Lion Tamer is also working hard in the studio. he has been tipped as one of Vic Galloway’s Scottish artists to watch in 2010!

Phew, rock’roll…

We should also be on Spotify any day now, we have a Last FM Page, and more than 5,000 friends on our myspace, so we are getting the word around.

Want to hear more mp3s of our acts? check here at our website.

More excellent music for 2010 – Kid Canaveral

kid-canaveral

The rather excellent Kid Canaveral have been around for several years now, and have some released some excellent singles in that time. They have been in the studio and this year should see the release of their long awaited debut LP.

David MacGregor, Kate Lazda, Rose McConnachie and Scott McMaster have also now ensured that their back catalogue is now available from all major download services, including eMusic. So pleased am I about this, that I have been adding their releases on eMusic to my best Scottish acts of the noughties list on eMusic (my lists for the 1980s and 1990s are also there, should you be so inclined).

This is a free download -check it out, then go and investigate the rest of their back catalogue!

Presenting 17 Seconds Records’ latest signing – Factory Kids!

factory-kids-2

We have been sitting on this exciting news for several weeks, wanting to wait until the new year to announce it. Well, it’s January 4, people are sliding back to work, and so are we.

17 Seconds Records’ seventh signing are The Factory Kids. The Factory Kids are a male/female duo, consisting of American Christina Marie on vocals and instruments and Warwickshire’s Tim Chaplin, also on vocals and instruments. They have so far released one self-titled album on New Zealand’s Powertool Records and the single ‘Not enough’/’Analog Dream’ on Oddbox Records, which was what brought them to our attention, in addition to their contributions to various indie compilations. They are based in Glasgow and plot a trajectory that takes in exciting stuff from the classic songwriting of Bob Dylan, thru c86 jangling to modern bass-heavy sounds.

Their first release for 17 Seconds Records will be the download five track ‘EP1’, which should be released in February. This will be followed by, er ‘EP2’ later on this year.

This is the lead track on the EP – have a listen and see what you think.

Then pop along and make friends with them at myspace. They’re really nice people. Then pop back here and let us know what you think.

A full update on 17 Seconds Records will follow very shortly…

yes…it’s political

che-guevera-posters2

Waiting for a few friends the other day in a cafe, I happened upon a commentary in the Scotsman newspaper. It can be conservative at times -yet there was an editorial I actually agreed with.

So I sent off a reply -and hardly edited at all, it got printed.

Result!

These seemed kinda appropriate:

Billy Bragg -‘There Is Power In A Union.’

Crass -‘Bloody Revolutions.’ mp3

Gene -‘As Good As It gets.’ mp3
